Carpenter Co. has an opening for a Laboratory Technician at our Reinhart Technical Center in Richmond, Virginia. This position is responsible for performing day-to-day operations and testing in the technical center Large-Scale Flammability Laboratory.

Carpenter Co. employees are committed to working hard to ensure production goals are met while maintaining operations excellence. As the successful candidate, you will be expected to perform weekly flow checks and step-calibrations, monitor gas usage and maintain equipment calibration schedules.

Your additional responsibilities as Laboratory Technician will include:

  • Perform large-scale or mattress flammability tests in the RTC Large-Scale Laboratory, which includes, but is not limited to, becoming fully proficient in the operation of cameras and camera software, 1633 ignition rigs, controls for make-up and exhaust hood air (HVAC) equipment and also fuel gas equipment during full or mattress-scale flammability testing.
  • Receive, unpack, insert into conditioning racks and log-in mattress and mattress foundations per required conditioning periods for tests such as 16 CFR  Part 1632 and 1633 including disposal and packing materials using lifts trucks and hand carts.
  • Track usage of materials and maintain calibration of laboratory equipment.
  • Training will be required in the use of cartridge full face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) personal protective equipment in order to extinguish large mattress.
  • Provide support for Polymer Products Group to include prototyping and testing.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Skills / Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 2+ years of prior lab experience
  • Basic understanding of standard laboratory procedures and safety practices
  • Ability to work with a team and meet deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills; both oral and written
  • Previous experience in firefighting is preferred
