Job Description

Carpenter Co. has an immediate opening for a leadership position as Materials Scientist, Recycling and Sustainability.  The position is based in Richmond, Virginia at our Reinhart Technical Center and will report to the Vice President of Research and Development. The main focus of the position is the solid plastic back to chemical pathway but would also include other circular uses for solid plastics. The primary materials are flexible polyurethane foams but would also include polyester fibers, expanded polystyrene and other textile materials. The Materials Scientist will act as the primary project manager for all internal as well as external joint development efforts.

The responsibilities will include the following:

  • Act as primary coordinator of global recycling projects and lead quarterly team meetings
  • Interface and track internal research projects with specific project teams at the RTC
  • Interface and track internal research projects with specific project teams in Europe
  • Act as primary contact with outside firms (key partners) on US focused joint-development projects
  • Attend and represent Carpenter at pertinent trade-shows involving PU recycling
  • Interface with industry organizations and supplier sustainability coordinators as appropriate to stay abreast of current industry issues related to PU recycling
  • Track technology in the field of plastics and PU recycling and provide frequent technology updates
  • Interface and participate in the Carpenter Sustainability Team – responsible for reporting on internal activities
  • Actively research methods and intellectual property in the field of PU recycling
  • Monitor competitor technologies and activities in the field
  • Act as subject matter expert for Carpenter in customer meetings or appropriate updates as needed

Skills / Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering; Masters or Ph.D. in those fields preferred
  • 15+ years of industrial experience in the field of polyurethanes or plastics recycling
  • Advanced project management experience
  • Extensive background in interacting with suppliers, industry leaders, customers
  • Extensive background in working in a technical team environment
  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills; preferred experience in performing presentations at large industry conferences or equivalent
  • Self-motivated individual with ability to work independently
  • Strong strategic and critical-thinking skills
  • 10-20% travel required; international travel required
